Qi Baishi (\u9f4a\u767d\u77f3, 1864-1957) was one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese painters. His original name is Qi Huang (\u9f4a\u749c) and style name Weiqing (\u6e2d\u6e05). Baishi (“white stone”) is one of his pseudonyms.\u00a0<\/span>Some of Qi’s major influences include the Ming Dynasty artist\u00a0Xu Wei (\u5f90\u6e2d)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the early Qing Dynasty painter\u00a0Zhu Da (\u6731\u8037, \u5373”\u516b\u5927\u5c71\u4eba”)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>The subjects of his paintings include almost everything, commonly animals, scenery, figures, vegetables, and so on. In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimps, or birds. Qi Baishi is particularly known for painting\u00a0shrimps<\/a>.<\/span>Born to a peasant from Xiangtan (\u6e58\u6f6d), Hunan, Qi became a carpenter at fourteen, and it was largely through his own efforts that he became adept at the arts of poetry, calligraphy, painting, an<\/span>d seal-carving. In his forties, Qi Baishi began traveling and looking for more inspiration. He came upon the Shanghai School, which was very popular at the time, and met\u00a0Wu Changshuo (\u5433\u660c\u78a9)<\/a>\u00a0who then became another mentor to him and inspired a lot of his works. Another influence of Qi Baishi came about fifteen years later, as Qi became close to\u00a0Chen Shizeng (\u9673\u5e2b\u66fe)<\/a>\u00a0after he settled down in Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Qi Baishi<\/span><\/span>\u00a0theorized that “paintings must be something between likeness and unlikeness.”\u00a0His prodigious output reflects a diversity of interests and experience, generally focusing on the smaller things of the world rather than the large landscape.Shrimp<\/a>,\u00a0fish<\/a>,\u00a0crabs<\/a>,\u00a0frogs<\/a>,\u00a0insects<\/a>, and\u00a0peaches<\/a>\u00a0were his favorite subjects. Using heavy ink, bright colors, and vigorous strokes, he created works of a fresh and lively manner that expressed his love of nature and life.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 In 1953 Qi Baishi was elected to the president of the Association of Chinese Artists. He was active to the end of his long life and served briefly as the honorary president of the Beijing Academy of Chinese Painting, which was founded in May, 1957.\u00a0He died in Beijing on September 16, 1957.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
