There is another form of existence: to sever oneself\u2014cleanly, without residue\u2014from the body of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not retreat, but rupture. Not resignation, but refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The world names it \u201cretirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In truth, it is exile by one\u2019s own hand: a deliberate abandonment of the herd, in order to live alone\u2014answerable to nothing but one\u2019s own taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No longer does one crawl before the idol of usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No longer does one beg for meaning by serving the needs of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One turns away\u2014coldly\u2014from this economy of justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, one founds oneself within the so-called culture of living: a domain that does not serve, does not justify, does not redeem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It simply is\u2014a sovereign territory of form, sensation, and self-creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Production. Reproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are the labors of the species\u2014mechanisms of its blind will to persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let them belong to the many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What remains\u2014what is higher\u2014is without purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It does not contribute. It does not advance. It does not explain itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is the excess of life over necessity: the refinement of existence into something willed for its own sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is what the timid call \u201cplay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But play, in its pure form, is not trivial\u2014it is tyrannical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It obeys no law beyond its own intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It exists because it must exist, because it affirms itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cultivated classes of the Edo period once knew this, and called it y\u016bgei\u2014disciplined frivolity, perfected uselessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Art belongs here. Ritual belongs here. Even the most fleeting amusements\u2014yes, even something like Pok\u00e9mon GO\u2014can, in their purified form, be transfigured into this domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To live outside society, then, is not escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is to reject the question, \u201cWhat is this for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and to answer instead with one\u2019s life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
